Zambia’s Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda has asked the High Court to dismiss a defamation lawsuit by Dangote Industries Zambia Limited. Mr Shamenda said the Dangote lawsuit should be set aside because it was wrongly taken to court.
Dangote Industries Zambia Limited sued Mr Shamenda for slander and libel. The company is demanding aggravated damages amounting to more than K100,000. The minister is alleged to have caused the publication of an article that a Dangote Industries Zambia Limited employee attempted to bribe him. “I crave the indulgence of the court for an order setting the writ and statement of claim by the applicant (Dangote Industries Zambia Limited) for irregularity,” he said. Mr Shamenda said the complaints by Dangote Limited were published by newspapers which are not party to the proceedings. Hearing has been set for November 26 this year.
