Mopani Copper Mine Plc has preceded with works of backfilling the sinkhole near the South Ore Body (SOB) Shaft in Kitwe after being graded as a safety hazard to informal miners invading it.
The sinkhole is a two hectare caving area within Mopani Copper Mines Plc’s mining rights area.
“The backfilling procedure comes as a safety precaution in line with mine safety regulations,” said Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga.
Mulenga addded that works began around 15:45 on the 26th July 2019 and continued throughout the weekend.
Meanwhile the move following the closure of a sinkhole near the South Ore Body (SOB) shaft Mopani Copper Mines was not welcomed by all as it sparked a riot in Wusakile Township in Kitwe.
The burning of tyres and shrubs had blocked Mindola Road hence classes at Kalela Primary School were immediately suspended.
Mopani Copper Mines Plc worked closely with the Mines Safety Department (MSD), Zambia Police Service and other relevant authorities during this operation.
