A Chinese firm, Ruida Investment Limited, is expected to invest US$20 million to revamp operations at Jifumpa old mine in Kasempa to start copper production.
About 300 jobs are expected to be created by the end of this year at the Jifumpa mine, formerly Kalengwa, which is located about 96 kilometres from Kasempa Boma and has a lifespan of 15 years.
In a recent interview, Kasempa district commissioner Goodson Sansakuwa said the Chinese mining firm has bought the mine from the former owners and have been on site for the past three months.
Mr Sansakuwa said the firm has embarked on the construction of a mine shaft and a leach processing plant.
“The company has so far created 60 jobs through contractual jobs and by the end of November this year over 300 permanent jobs are expected to be created,” he said.
Mr Sansakuwa said the new investment in the mining sector will lead to wealth creation in the district and also open the area to new investments in other sectors such as the telecommunication industry.
“People will have money in communities when they are engaged to work at the mine…The investment in the old mine will spur telecommunication in the area by the three mobile service providers,” he said.
Mr Sansakuwa said Government is also constructing an irrigation dam at a cost of K6 million in Katende area for irrigation, domestic use and fish farming.
