Miners trapped underground at Mopani Mine in Kitwe

Several miners have been trapped underground at Mopani Copper Mine’s Mindolo operation following a fire at the mine’s power station.

The miners, who had reported for a night shift, were in a carriage that takes them underground when the power plant caught fire.

A combined team of fire officers from Mopani, KCM, CEC and Kitwe City Council are currently making efforts to secure safe return of the unknown number of miners from the 1,200-metre Mindolo underground shaft.

It is not yet clear what could have caused the fire, although information coming out is pointing to increased load-shedding by Zesco Limited.

Mopani management are now relying on a generator to provide lighting while rescue operation is in progress.

This is the second accident in less than a month that Mopani is recording.

Recently, four miners, whose bodies have not been recovered to date, save for a few body parts, died after an underground earth collapse.
