A potential P2 billion contract in Zambia could mark a significant step in Naledi Mining Services Company’s regional expansion, signalling the scope for Botswana-based mining services firms to secure major opportunities beyond their domestic market. The wholly owned Debswana subsidiary’s pursuit of the deal reflects the commercial potential of exporting local mining expertise into regional markets.
Chief Executive Officer Bokang Thitoyamore said the company is close to signing its first major international contract, valued at approximately P2 billion. Some processes remain outstanding before the deal can be finalised, and further details are expected at a later stage. The potential agreement marks a significant step in Naledi’s regional growth strategy and underscores the opportunities open to Botswana’s mining services sector across Africa.
Zambia is not the only target. Naledi is also exploring prospects in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Malawi and Zimbabwe, where demand for technical expertise, investment and skills development could open the way to partnerships and business expansion. Speaking about regional opportunities at the Botswana Mining Show this week, Thitoyamore said Naledi has been engaging government ministries and mining stakeholders across the region to identify potential investments and value adding partnerships.
In Zimbabwe, the company has held discussions on 13 mining assets as it explores ways to participate in the country’s mining sector. The artisanal mining industry there also offers scope to introduce more conventional methods and improve operational practices and productivity. In the DRC and Malawi, Naledi sees openings to strengthen technical skills, governance and operational capacity, which could support more efficient and sustainable mining.
Thitoyamore also pointed to Botswana’s mining policy environment as a foundation for local companies seeking to expand into international markets. He stressed the importance of sound investment decisions as the industry evolves and businesses navigate new opportunities across the region.
