The Central Statistics Office (CSO) monthly bulletin report for July has indicated that 76.8 per cent of Zambia’s major export sales in June resulted from intermediate goods such as Copper anodes and cathodes.
In accordance to the same report, 23.2 per cent of the nation’s total exports resulted from consumer goods such as raw materials and capital goods.
Notably, the major export destination in June 2019 was Switzerland, accounting for 42.1 percent of the total export earnings.
“The main export product to Switzerland was copper anodes for electrolytic refining, accounting for 68.1 percent of total export earnings from that country. China was the second main export destination, accounting for 22.3 percent at the total export earnings,” the report stated.
Further in the report was Congo DR, ranked in third place being the export destination accounting for 14.1 percent of the total export earnings.The main export product being sulphuric acid and petroleum in bulk, accounting for 15.0 percent of total export earnings from that country.
“South Africa was the fourth main destination of Zambia’s exports, accounting for 4.2 percent of the total export earnings. The main export product to South Africa were bullion semi-manufactured forms (Gold), accounting for 26.3 percent of total export earnings from that country.”
Furthermore, Malawi was ranked fifth main export destination accounting for 2.8 percent of the total export earnings, with the main export product being tobacco, partly or wholly stemmed/stripped, and accounting for 41.4 percent of the total export earnings from that country.
These five countries collectively accounted for 85.5 percent of Zambia’s total export earnings in the month of June this year.
