Mingomba Mine Signals Zambia’s Strategic Phase of Copper Growth

Zambia is stepping into a new phase of its copper expansion strategy, with the US$300 million Mingomba Mine set to break ground on 29 April  2026. The project, led by KoBold Metals, is expected to become a key contributor to the country’s long-term production goals, with planned output of up to 300,000 metric tonnes of copper annually by 2030. This aligns with Zambia’s broader ambition to reach three million metric tonnes of copper production by 2031.

Beyond output, the development reflects a growing focus on scaling new projects that can sustain momentum in the sector. The mine has already created more than 200 jobs during its exploration phase, with further employment opportunities expected as construction begins and operations expand. Located near Chililabombwe, Mingomba is also expected to stimulate local economic activity, reinforcing the role of mining not just as a source of export revenue, but as a driver of jobs and regional development.
